Winter's Winning Dress

Continuing with our #DVFCraft series, we explore the design process of Winter 17’s Canton Mesh Dress.

Chief Creative Officer Jonathan Saunders printed a romantic flower pattern onto a new, ruched-style dress that’s cut in our new and coveted, gauzy nylon mesh fabric.

A stylized, hand-drawn take on jasmine flowers, our custom Canton print is depicted in the ornate style of traditional English wallpaper. The sketch is then transferred to a digital file allowing it to be rendered in rich tones including electric blue, Bordeaux and ivory.

The dress is cut in our stretchy nylon mesh—making its debut this season. First, a prototype in plain black mesh is made and draped on the mannequin to determine the silhouette and find the perfect fit. Meters of silk satin and nylon mesh are printed using a specialist traditional screen printing technique. Silk screens are hand-loaded with custom-mixed dyes and overprinted several times to achieve the rich, multi-layered colors.

In the design studio, pattern pieces are used to trace the various parts of the dress, which are then sewn together to create the spaghetti strap satin slip and the separate long-sleeve mesh overlay.

To create the ruching effect, ties are threaded throughout the dress, traveling up the body and down the sleeves, and pulled tight into place to enhance the feminine silhouette.

Pull-on and made for movement—with a separate slip that can be worn under the dress or on its own—our Canton Mesh Dress is as easy as it is impactful
