Bidding in Beijing

A floor-length, black sequined gown marked “Love,” in vermilion red, effortlessly encapsulated the hopeful sentiment of the 2011 Harper’s Bazaar Charity Event at the Beijing Park Hyatt in China last week. The highlight of the auction item was that the sparkling dress was made and worn exclusively by Diane at the DVF Red Ball in Shanghai, China to celebrate the Journey of a Dress exhibition this past March.

Over 400 guests, including prominent Chinese entrepreneurs and celebrities, dined and bid on special items to raise funds for the China Charities Aid Foundation and the Jacky Chan Charitable Foundation. The organizations aim to help the victims of child abduction and trafficking, and provide financial and medical support to children afflicted by serious illnesses in poverty-stricken regions.

Featured in the auction brochure, Sun Xun, one of China’s most well known artists, painted an exclusive backdrop to highlight the DVF gown. Chinese actress Tian Hairong donated $36,021 (RMB230,000) for the gown and Angy Ling, the Sales Director from Lonshion, received the Charity Award from Harper’s Bazaar on behalf of DVF.

In the end, the 2011 Harper’s Bazaar Charity event raised $5,110,375 (RMB32,630,000) and was featured by over 100 media sources across China. To conclude the candlelit dinner and after party, each guest departed the event with a “Love is life” t-shirt spreading one of Diane’s favorite mantras into the night.

Piano Pop-Up

We’ve heard of pop-up shops but a pop-up piano? Thanks to the non-profit organization Sing for Hope, the sound of music will fill the streets from uptown to downtown and everywhere in between. This public art initiative features 88 public pianos (representative of the number of keys) that have been decorated by fashion and art world stars and placed throughout the five boroughs until July 2nd.

Diane’s Steinway & Sons Baby Grand has been decked out in her signature chain link print and “Love is Life”mantra. It is appropriately stationed at Lincoln Center’s Hearst Plaza, where she holds her bi-annual ready-to-wear fashion shows.

Of the 88 pianos, 10 of them – including Diane’s – are available for bidding through July 14th on The money raised during the auction will benefit Sing for Hope’s vision that all New Yorkers should have access to the arts. The volunteer program brings the arts to under-resourced communities.
