Week of May 22

At DVF we believe in designing your own destiny… and it never hurts to have a clue about what’s headed your way! That’s why we’re sharing weekly horoscopes courtesy of Diane’s astrologer, Shelley von Strunckel. Scroll through to learn what’s written in the stars for you.

ARIES
March 20 – April 18
If you know what you want, you’ll rarely put off decisions. Yet with so much unsettled, changes have undermined your efforts to make certain exciting arrangements. Although things are still in flux, you’re urged to settle on, and commit to, plans within the next few days. After that the actual opportunities involved are likely to change, possibly overnight. It’s a matter of now or never.

TAURUS
April 19 – May 19
The ideas planet Mercury, which is in Taurus, ends its retrograde cycle today, and with it, this period of confusion you’ve been facing ends. However, you’ll find you’re unable to answer many of the questions it’s triggered right away. Give yourself the gift of time, both to reflect on these and explore your options. That way, once you make decisions, you’ll be sure they’re wise ones.

GEMINI
May 20 – June 19
Now that the Sun and, as of Tuesday, the planet of money and relationship, Venus are in Gemini, life is likely to become far more agreeable. Of as much significance is the fact your ruler Mercury ends its retrograde cycle today, although the confusion it triggers could last for a few days yet. Still, gradually life will become easier and you’ll be more contented.

CANCER
June 20 – July 21
It’s not that you mind making changes. It’s that the matters in question involve your work or various obligations and could influence those closest, personally or professionally, as well. Consequently, you’ve been uncertain what’s best. Still, the recent Full Moon brought feelings, both yours and those of others, to a head. That will trigger frank discussions, which make it clear exactly what needs to be done.

LEO
July 22 – August 21
Having faced numerous twists and turns, in circumstances and both your priorities and those of others, at long last you’re nearing decisions. Consequently, you’ll be relieved that Mercury’s retrograde cycle ends today. Still, since the confusion typical of this period won’t vanish overnight, ensure that both your decisions and plans are flexible. This is handy, as it gives you time to explore your options.

VIRGO
August 22 – September 21
While the period during which Mercury is retrograde has a reputation for triggering troublesome confusion, in your case it’s spurred you to meet interesting people and explore new ideas and intriguing places. Now that it’s no longer in reverse motion, you should be able to turn what you’ve learnt over the past weeks into plans, and in some cases, arrangements of a more lasting nature.

LIBRA
September 22 – October 21
Although you’ve achieved a great deal over the past month or so, especially regarding business or financial matters, it hasn’t exactly been fun. Yet with both the Sun and your ruler Venus departing this portion of your chart to accent new people, ideas and places, suddenly the focus shifts to broadening your horizons. While you’ll still be facing numerous practicalities, they’ll be far less burdensome.

SCORPIO
October 22 – November 20
In early March the forthright Mars departed Scorpio and moved to accent practical, business and financial matters. You’ve achieved a great deal on that front but still have several more to deal with. Tackle them now, ideally before Mars returns to your sign on Friday, beginning a review of your past decisions and an intense cycle during which you’ll be making plans for the future.

SAGITTARIUS
November 21 – December 20
As a fire sign you think and act swiftly. The more you do in any one day, the better. This allows little time for reflection and still less for doubts or unsettling feelings. Yet the recent Sagittarius Full Moon not only accented them, you’re talking them over with others. Don’t rush through these conversations. The time you invest in discussions could lead to life-changing insights.

CAPRICORN
December 21 – January 19
Those individuals who plunge into arrangements without much thought amaze you. Being involved with them is another matter, as is the case now. It’s either that or existing plans of your own are being unceremoniously rearranged. Annoying and, possibly, worrying as these changes seem, they’re an invitation to consider new options, ones that were you not forced to explore them, you’d have rejected without a thought.

AQUARIUS
January 20 – February 18
This may be one of the most unsettling and, possibly, worrying weeks of the year’s first half. However, when you look back on it, you’ll realize what caused you the greatest concern actually turned out to be breakthroughs, although in completely unexpected forms. Knowing that, make a point of exploring absolutely everything, including those ideas or offers that you regard as being of absolutely no interest.

PISCES
February 19 – March 19
Tempting as it is to brush off discussions about potential changes in elements of your domestic or working life, at least talk over what’s arisen. True, this would throw your existing, and carefully crafted, arrangements into chaos. Yet you’ve long sensed a major rethink was in order. This is it, and once it’s begun, you’ll be amazed, and delighted, how much you enjoy the process.

Weekend Update:
Summer Whites

Whether or not you believe in fashion rules (we, for the record, most emphatically do not), you’re sure to notice an influx of white post Memorial Day. Even a woman for whom leopard is a neutral can take a palette cleanser every now and again, so we’ve assembled our favorite fresh whites that are so DVF.
The Iggy Bag: White can be totally rock ‘n’ roll (example: Bianca Jagger’s wedding suit), which is why  our leather-and-chain Iggy works so well in this summer-ready shade.
The Arlette Jacket: This intricate lace jacket sold out almost immediately on DVF.com, but if you absolutely need it to refresh your favorite work shift or jeans, you’re in luck: it’s still available in select DVF shops and at neimanmarcus.com—for now.
The Genesis Pant: This slim stretch trouser quickly became a favorite for bringing a certain (very flattering) lightness to work and weekend.
The Fiorenza Dress: We are currently obsessed with lace, and this fit and flare dress is a super chic way to wear the trend.
The Bitsy Bag: If you were overzealous in your spring cleaning, and have pared your purse down to the absolute minimum, we can’t think of a better micro mini bag than the Bitsy. If you’re still stuck on a tote, this is a great wallet substitute as well.
The Lauryn Top: We’ve elevated the plain white tee with front pleating and a neckline in – you guessed it – a modern, geometric, must-have white lace.

May

Model Megan Williams lit up the Cannes Film Festival circuit this week in a series of DVF looks. For the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala, where DVF donated a look to the runway-auction, Williams chose a glittering embellished wrap dress, first seen during the DVF Fall 2016 Experience on Karlie Kloss. She finished the look with the Tonda minaudière, a sleek clutch she also carried to the De Grisogono Party. This time she paired it with a vintage Qipao wrap dress for a fresh yet dramatic look.

NYLON’s Young Hollywood Party brought out the brightest (not to mention most powerful) young faces today, from Jaden Smith and Lucky Blue Smith (no relation!) to Justine Skye and Kylie Jenner. Model Ireland Baldwin was on hand, looking one part Old Hollywood, one part new starlet in our graphic DVF Frederica slip dress embellished with sequins and lace. For a fresh take on glamour, she skipped mom Kim Basinger’s blonde curls for pin straight locks – and added an armful of finely drawn tattoos.

The 2016 amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala

“An ode to all-out fierceness” is how Carine Roitfeld has described the runway she curated for the 2016 amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala. Technically it is “The Disco Collection” but either way, it’s no surprise Ms. Roitfeld asked Diane to donate a look for the fashionable fundraiser. Hosted at the eternally glamorous Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, the event is always a highlight of the Cannes film festival circuit, featuring models of the moment in jaw-dropping gowns that are auctioned off for charity. To mix things up a bit, and pay tribute to that 70s theme, we sent a dazzling embellished wrap jumpsuit from our Fall 2016 Collection down the glittering runway on Valery Kaufman. After the show, it was auctioned to raise funds for amfAR’s work to end AIDS.

Annoying as recent setbacks have been, by now you’re recognising that each has revealed important facts that otherwise would have escaped you. While you’ve undoubtedly dealt with many, you’ve yet to tackle several, mostly because you’re short of facts. Playing it cool in this way may be out of character but, as the past weeks have shown, being impatient about such matters can cost you dearly.

TAURUS
April 19 – May 19
Hopefully by now you’ve understood that life’s not about getting everything right the first time around but, rather, viewing setbacks as an opportunity both to seek out the source of the initial problems and review the facts. This is especially important now, with Mercury retrograde in your sign until Sunday the 22nd. Complicated as things have been, once the dust settles, you’ll realise how much you’ve learned.

GEMINI
May 20 – June 19
In early April your ruler Mercury moved into the most sensitive, and strategic part of your chart and was joined there by the Sun, on the 19th, triggering a cycle during which you’ve reviewed several complex matters. Some have been personal, others involve work or obligations. However, in each, unravelling issues has required patience. Now that’s rewarded, with both insights and often unexpected, and exciting, offers.

CANCER
June 20 – July 21
As a Cancerian, you understand the influence of the Full Moon, on Saturday, May 21st, better than most. Still, even you could be perplexed by the issues that arise, as both feelings and changes build. The secret is to try not to take anything personally. That may not be easy, but the calmer you are, the more swiftly you’ll turn issues and obstacles to your advantage.

LEO
July 22 – August 21
You insist you enjoy change. But despite the amazing outcome of the events of May’s first half, you’ve also complained, a fair amount. That’s because good as these developments are, they’ll mean rethinking elements of your life, if not altering your perspective. Still, as you’ve already discovered, what you get, personally and in terms of achievements, more than justifies a little disarray. It’s the same this week.

VIRGO
August 22 – September 21
As you begin the final week of your ruler Mercury’s retrograde cycle, you realise how informative the errors it triggers can be. Some have enabled you to resolve persistent issues, others have taken you into unexplored, and unexpectedly intriguing, territory via discussion and new ideas. Some of these could lead to study or even travel. Continue to explore. Your life will be much richer for it.

LIBRA
September 22 – October 21
If you’ve already accepted the fact that numerous crucial decisions are in the hands of others, you’ve overcome the week’s biggest challenge. True, in the past these were dealt with jointly. But for practical, financial, business or even legal reasons only so many can deal with these. Better yet, you’re able to explore certain ideas or offers. These will prove so intriguing you’ll be relieved you’re unencumbered.

SCORPIO
October 22 – November 20
It’s bizarre, but things have gone well, and in so many ways, over the past weeks that you’re feeling a bit paranoid. You’ve worried you’d missed some potential difficulty. You haven’t. Now it’s time to consolidate both the ideas you’ve had no time to explore and those you have. Urgent as decisions seem, you’ve lots more to learn about before you even think of finalising arrangements.

SAGITTARIUS
November 21 – December 20
Although you haven’t always had a say in arrangements or future decisions over the past several weeks, things have gone brilliantly. Enough you feel the need to turn ideas into plans. Do so if you must, but you’re better off waiting to see what the Sagittarius Full Moon, on Saturday the 21st, brings your way. It’s not about a single plan, but exploring a series of options.

CAPRICORN
December 21 – January 19
Leaving obligations undone may be out of character. But in several situations only so much can be done, and you have. Once these are dealt with, judging by this week’s chart, you’ll want to turn your attention to life’s pleasures, that is, who and what brings you joy. You’ve been putting these off for too long. It’s time to balance your hard work with some fun.

AQUARIUS
January 20 – February 18
Ordinarily those who change their minds frequently aren’t annoying but, rather, fascinate you. Yet the changes certain individuals are making are irritating, mostly because they’re disrupting elements of your life or future plans. This may be annoying but, ironically, these shakeups are forcing you to at least consider new ideas or activities you’ve ignored or, possibly, dismissed. Explore them. You’ll be glad you did.

PISCES
February 19 – March 19
The last thing you want is a crisis. However, either certain situations or one particular individual are so inflexible that problems seem inevitable. And there’s nothing you can do about it. Accepting that isn’t easy, but it’s the first step to turning these tricky matters to your advantage. While some changes are obvious, others are less clear. Still, play things right and they’ll all benefit you.

Your Personal Profile

In celebration of the new DVF Zodiac Collection, we’re delighted to share personal star sign profiles from Diane’s astrologer, Shelley von Strunckel. Scroll for yours, and shop the collection here.

TAURUS
April 19 – May 19
Sensual and sensible, Taurus has a powerful instinct for what, and who, is worthwhile. They’ll work diligently to create this existence, for themselves, loved ones and at work. This often leads to a world of elegance and even wealth. It’s the same with love—they aim high. Once life, family or career is organised, they’re creatures of habit. If forced to make changes, they’ll battle, give up reluctantly, then settle happily with new arrangements. Their sensual nature is reflected in their affection for luscious colors and textures, in their clothing and home.

GEMINI
May 20 – June 19
Clever Geminis think and learn swiftly, and living up to their symbol – the twins – often live dual lives, with two distinct careers, or even very different residences. Although they rarely give it much thought, their legendary charm opens doors, personally, romantically and in their career. As an air sign, they’re inquisitive, and will explore something intriguing then switch to that, often overnight. Stunningly stylish, they’ll create a new ‘look’ or re-invent themselves and their lifestyle. Family and long term friends expect these changes. It is, in fact, what makes being around a Gemini exciting.

CANCER
June 20 – July 19
Getting to know a Cancerian can take time, especially because in today’s busy world the focus is on action and swiftly moving ideas. Understanding what makes this sensitive water sign tick requires patience, and building trust. Many are creative, some in business settings – and in fact numerous Cancerians nurture ideas into commercial success, if not a significant fortune. Others use this in the arts, yet others for home and family. Being creative, many have multiple lives and careers, and manage to devise a unique blend of creativity, business, property and a rich home life.

LEO
July 22 – August 21
Dynamic Leos live with a zest that suggests they have their own power source. Some are quiet, others the centre of attention, but they all radiate a warmth, and often glamour, that draws others to them. This, plus their fierce determination to achieve their goals, could make them seem overbearing. Yet their genuine interest in others, from family and partners to colleagues, creates intense bonds. For somebody who lives with such passion, they can be creatures of habit and furiously resist change, to the extent it must sometimes be forced on them, by others or sometimes destiny.

VIRGO
August 22 – September 21
Being an earth sign, Virgo combines a pleasure in the sensual world with the crisp intellect that comes with being perhaps the most rational sign of the zodiac. Nothing escapes analysis. This can sometimes be critical, but is as often compassionate. This trait is behind their caring nature, one from which friends, colleagues, loved ones and, sometimes, the world benefits. Yet there’s a critical side, of self and, occasionally, others. The trick is finding a balance between these two, then surfing what life offers, using those skills to support others, be creative and enjoy simply being themselves.

LIBRA
September 22 – October 21
Libra’s symbol is the balance, and it symbolises their finest characteristic, their instinctive understanding of others and capacity for diplomacy, with their greatest challenge, anxiety about confrontation. This, combined with their clever mind, gives them a deft ability to handle even very difficult individuals, thus their success in ‘people-professions’ from public relations to the law. It’s the same personally, they’re universally adored yet often spend years seeking that perfect personal love. In both, the trick is balance, enjoying what each day offers, yet enthusiastically exploring the encounters and options life brings each day.

SCORPIO
October 22 – November 20
Born under perhaps the most cautious, thorough yet emotionally vulnerable of the signs, gaining the confidence of a Scorpio takes time. The patience required is rewarded by a relationship as deep as it will be lasting. Their rare perceptive abilities result in creative and analytical gifts, thus, career possibilities in anything from the sciences to the creative realms, art or design world. Eerily observant, they understand others, often better than they do themselves. Trust is built over time, and those who have a Scorpio in their life benefit from a rare wisdom and loyalty.

SAGITTARIUS
November 21 – December 20
Sagittarius, possibly the most idealistic and certainly the most energetic of signs, adores living for the sake of it, which means they thrive on freedom, and their activities and alliances must be rewarding or they’ll suddenly rethink things, if not make dramatic changes. Inquisitive, restless and always eager to learn more, routine is their enemy. Yet in certain settings, for example, those that involve acquiring complex skills or academic degrees, it’s necessary. Learning to create, and maintain, a balance between this freedom and self-discipline is key to both Sagittarian achievement and happiness.

CAPRICORN
December 21 – January 19
Most Capricorns are born with a line up of goals, and many know those objectives from a young age. For some it’s a classic career, for others the perfect family, for a few, a carefully crafted profession, possibly as a world expert in their particular passion. These pursuits fuel their drive, and achieving each step gives their life form. It’s also part of their greatest challenge, which is learning to truly relax, rather than just taking a vacation. Often the best moments are with family and intimate friends, alliances built up over years, the kind that matter most to Capricorn.

AQUARIUS
January 20 – February 18
It’s said that Aquarians live a couple of decades ‘ahead’ of the rest of the world. Their inborn inquisitiveness, combined with their sharp mind means they’re playing with trends – in ideas, lifestyle, and fashion and food – long before anybody else. This usually leads to enduring friendships, often with those whose nature is as questioning. It’s the same with career or life plan, there needs to be room for change, if not re-inventing themselves from time to time. Not surprisingly, many find themselves in settings, personal or professional, that are central to pivotal changes.

PISCES
February 19 – March 19
Hang out with a Pisces and you’ll discover an art of living, and loving, that’s unique to their idealistic nature. Their basic philosophy is ‘why should anything be merely adequate when it could be superb?’ While Pisceans are sometimes found in the most mundane of jobs and lifestyles, they bring a special something – to each day, each task and each relationship. While usually this brings magic in their own life, the pressure can lead to stress, if not dramas. Practical compromise doesn’t come naturally but, for Pisces, is an essential key to living in the world.

ARIES
March 20 – April 18
Dynamic, quick-thinking Aries usually have more to do than they have time for – and like it that way. They loathe routine. Ideally, passion – in life, love or work – takes priority. Still, even the most independent-minded and impatient Aries will become astonishingly tolerant with loved ones, working for something that matters or those they care for deeply. These individuals, and often their own new projects, take priority. Still, for Aries, there’s nothing better than a new challenge, whether it’s training to run a marathon, planting a garden or starting a new business.

Meet Astrologer Shelley von Strunckel

In celebration of the new DVF Zodiac Collection, we’ve kicked off a weekly horoscope with Diane’s astrologer, Shelley von Strunckel. Now, get to know the woman behind our new feature on what’s written in the stars!

How did you come to study astrology? Did you always know this is what you wanted to do?
From my earliest days, I was fascinated by spirituality. I recall hearing about the concept of reincarnation in a TV show when I was about six, and by the age of ten was reading books on the world’s faiths (yes, really!). In my teens I explored various paths by reading and attending lectures. Gradually that broadened to studying yoga, meditation – and astrology. By then I was working in retailing, so I blended the study of the cycles of fashion with those of astrology. Gradually astrology became more central to my interests, but I didn’t turn it into a career until I was 30. I’m convinced my business background, as a buyer, contributed to my skills working with clients. It was a decade later that I started writing for magazines and newspapers.

Tell us about your approach and what advice would you give readers on how to use your columns as a tool for insight into themselves and their lives?
There’s a tendency to see astrology as a form of fortune-telling. Of course in the past, it was – in that, in the past, people didn’t have much freedom of choice. Life was dictated by their background, social status and even gender. These days, it’s more about understanding ourselves, and the cycle we’re in. Now we’ve greater latitude, which means astrology is more of a strategic tool, one to assist those who’re already creating their own life in understanding the cycles of life.

How did you meet Diane?
There’s a circle of what I can only call magical women who I met early in my career as an astrologer. Diane was one of them. For obvious reasons I never discuss clients, but there is one amusing tale I can tell about my relationship with Diane. She told me that for a couple of years I kept speaking of her work shifting dramatically, that it would involve fashion, but that she’d be selling it in an entirely new medium, one that hadn’t yet been invented. She said that, at the time, it really irritated her, as she had no idea what I was talking about. It was, of course, her breakthrough work on Home Shopping Network – she only realised this years later!

Astrologer, writer, producer, arts enthusiast, hostess. You wear many hats. How do you find the time and what advice would you give other women hoping to fit it all in?
I lead a really busy life – I’m not alone in that. Part of it is because I sit, writing for so much of the day, once I’m done, I long to get out, to see people. The mix is wonderful and hugely satisfying. My single secret is meditation. I’ve done it for years (and teach it…). I’ve done it for so long that, rather than needing a long session, I can ‘visit’ that state – that is meditate for about five minutes. That realigns my thinking and, somehow, streamlines my day – and life.

Home is a waterside loft in London…tell us more about that and how you designed it to reflect all of your many passions.
The loft I live in is magical. I was looking for a big space and found it online. But the pictures only showed the loft room as it was, not that it was over a canal or had a magnificent view of London. The design was outdated, a good excuse to gut it and begin again, making a space in which I could live, write and entertain efficiently. It’s a joy. I have wonderful art, masses of books and beautiful objects, and they create the atmosphere. Still, I’m a serial re-builder. I’m selling it and about to create a new – as exciting – space in another part of London.

Diane loves mantras. Do you have any words that you live by?
My mantra? When the going gets rough, I remind myself what every astrologer knows – that life is about cycles. And that the more challenging the cycle, the more we’ll take away from it.

The Elements

As we introduce the DVF Zodiac Collection, we asked Diane’s astrologer, Shelley von Strunckel, to explain the elements at the root of each star sign, and what they mean for your style. Scroll to learn more, and you can shop the collection here.

The elements referred to in astrology are universal, and are part of many ancient traditions, east and west, and contemporary ways of understanding ourselves.

FIRE
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius: About action, the more and faster, the better
See that person across the room whose foot is jigging nonstop? That’s a fire sign who doesn’t have enough to do. Dynamic, they’re usually juggling a range of projects in various states of completion. For them, life’s about action; a series of meetings, then off to traverse Africa on foot. Somehow they fit in family – and friends, too – who’re expected to join in the thrilling, heart-warming circus that is the fire sign existence. While they’re often exhausted, they ignore it until the fall in a heap, recover and begin again. Style? Drama, my dear—it’s the only way!

EARTH
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn: About the here and now
These warm, clever and practical-minded individuals both have a knack for and enjoy organising the physical world, from their comfortable homes and possibly gardens to their eye for beauty (and value) and instinct for turning that to a profit, whether it’s collecting antique lace, classic dinner services or jewels from the 20’s. Their style is opulent, making anything from a formal look to jeans look like couture. Others rely on them, for advice but also pure warmth. These sensualists love, and understand their bodies, and know how to eat well, and wisely.

AIR
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius: The realms of the mind and ideas
Quick thinking, witty, always the first to know what’s up – and out – air signs are living antennas, picking up on the ‘vibe’ as easily as others breathe. The academic and media worlds brim with these inquisitive characters, but they’re to be found anywhere life’s rich and ever-changing nature is to be experienced, teaching, travelling, guiding others – or just wandering. They combine nervous energy with a tendency to forget to eat, so tend to have a wiry body type, with a knack for putting together a look that forecasts next season’s styles.

WATER
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces: Sensitive, intuitive beings who both feel and touch others deeply
Some are quiet and low profile, the force behind those who’re powerful, others use that sensitivity to create everything from successful business to art (think entrepreneurs to writers and actors). While many thrive in an urban atmosphere, others need to decompress away from it all. But all create a ‘family of friends,’ those with whom trust grows over the years. Both their personal style and way of living are usually unique, perhaps adopting a quirky designer or doing vintage and, at home, in ‘period’ setting.
