The DVF Awards

March 11, 2012 byDVF

Diane Sawyer, Representative Nancy Pelosi, Lauren Bush Lauren, Tatiana von Furstenberg, Fran Lebowitz and Oprah Winfrey, who was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, are just a few of the remarkable women who joined co-hosts Tina Brown and Diane von Furstenberg as DVF celebrated The Third Annual DVF Awards on Friday night. Israeli Opposition Leader Tzipi Livni and Ambassador Melanne Verveer were also in attendance. Presented as part of Newsweek & The Daily Beast’s Women in the World Summit, The DVF Awards recognize five women whose strength, courage and leadership is changing the lives of women in their communities and beyond.

“I am so inspired by all of these incredible women, and humbled,” Diane said just before the ceremony began. “Tonight is truly a celebration.”

Creative Director Yvan Mispelaere had to second that emotion, smiling as he proclaimed the evening’s mantra: “Proud to be woman!”

The soft voice of Ingrid Michaelson singing “Live it with Love,” set the tone for the evening, as honorees Oprah Winfrey, Layli Miller-Muro of the Tahirih Justice Center, Chouchou Namegabe of the South Kivu’s Association of Women Journalists, Panmela Castro of Rede Nami, and Jaycee Dugard of The JAYC Foundation, moved the audience with their stories of struggle and triumph.

The evening’s presenters included Jessica Alba, who sparkled in a DVF pale pink sequined mini dress, Debra Winger, and journalist Maria Bartirimo.

Oprah Winfrey was statuesque in an emerald green wrap gown as she accepted her award and presented the honor to Jaycee Dugard, telling her, “I am so proud of you, your courage, your ability to press onward toward the future and toward a more victorious life for yourself and for using your courage, your strength and your power to show the world that you care.”

And that is what The DVF Awards are all about.
