Flashback Friday: Interview Then and Now

September 13, 2012

Diane first appeared on the cover of Interview in 1977, and then again in 1981. In the latest issue, featuring the lovely cover girl Emma Stone, she chats with David Colman about the past, the present and the future. This Flashback Friday, we’re taking a look back at Diane’s 1981 conversation with Iris van Herpen to see how things have (or haven’t!) changed since her days of dancing at Studio 54. Don’t forget to click through our slide-show for a peak at this month’s feature as well as a few choice flashback photos!

On being the woman you want to be:

1981: “I think fashion and beauty are really projections of either who you are, or what you want to be. There is very little necessity involved. What I like about fashion, makeup and accessories is that they allow you to project what you want to be when you want to be it. Once upon a time, you had one style only, but today you can be many different people.”

2012: “I really sell confidence, because confidence is what allows you to design your life and be the person you are or want to be. You can actually design your life, but it’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of truth and it’s a lot of self-searching and honesty with yourself, which is not always pleasant.”

On reincarnation:

1981: “I don’t believe that everyone is necessarily reincarnated, but I think this is my last life, though I’ve lived many others. (IRIS: Why do you think that this is your last life?) Because it’s so good, I can’t imagine another.”

2012: “Do I believe in reincarnation? Well, let’s say that I believe in karma. I think you make your own karma. If you’re a good person, the goodness will continue through your descendants. But do I believe in total reincarnation? I don’t know…”

On childhood and being a woman:

1981: “(As a little girl) I hated dolls. I loved books. I would carry all my books from one room to another. And I couldn’t wait to be a grown-up…I wanted to be different. I wanted to dance in a circus with horses.”

2012: “I always wanted to be a femme fatale. Even when I was a young girl, I never really wanted to be a girl. I wanted to be a woman.”
