The Art of Scarves

Continuing with our #DVFCraft series, we uncover the design process and techniques behind our vibrant Asymmetric Scarf Dress.

Evolving the transformative powers of the silk scarf, for the Spring collection chief creative officer Jonathan Saunders zeroed in on border-print, foulard scarves—and thus the basis of the Asymmetric Scarf Dress was formed.

To begin, our team of designers use toile—or, sample fabric—to establish the shape and silhouette of the dress on the stand. Oversized versions of our custom scarf prints are then placed in various combinations and collages to ensure an enticing, unexpected, and lively color combination. The lustrous, sumptuous silk twill is printed by expert colorists who perfectly match the design to the original sketch made in the New York design studio.

To create the dress, two oversized silk scarves are first folded in half on the diagonal and then tacked together, after which they are draped on the stand so that the grain of the fabric is on the bias, allowing the fabric and fall of the garment to be at its most fluid.

Scarves—if done right—can utterly transform an outfit. Showcasing our custom graphic prints, and bursting with color, our assortment of 100% silk, square scarves are miniature measures of the Diane von Furstenberg brand, embracing the core design details that build the foundation of the brand’s aesthetic.
