Diane’s Diary: Sailing Southern Italy

August 13, 2012 byDiane

Ponza is a beautiful island that is not so frequented by tourists. The hike from the village to the Faro ( lighthouse) is one of my favorite walks…it is quite long and the view along the coast is magnificent…it is also my first ever hike…In 1975, I remember a friend taking me there…and I was forever addicted to hiking !  Talita, Tassilo, Barry and Shannon came along and we dipped in the clear water until the boat came to pick us up ! On the way to Capri now !

Capri…woke up with the sun…the Faraglione looked as splendid as ever…remarkable ! Tourists have been charmed by this island since Antiquity…

The boat is anchored outside Marina Piccola…went for a swim by Malaparte’s house…water clear and delicious. Lunch at Il Scoglio followed by a massage…

Talita and I climb to the village…a visit to the pharmacy, I buy her some earrings, we spot some DVFs in one of the chic boutiques…it is hot…dinner at Villa Verde…the best risotto and the freshest fish ! For the best pizza go to la Capannina !
Swimming day at Li Galli in front of Positano… a tiny set of private islands that used to belong to Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev…water is flat and clear…

Amalfi is still the same place it ever was…the Cathedral, with its convent in the back…the pastry shops, the handmade paper for the best diaries…and the Amalfi ceramics !
But the best detour is to go and visit Paestum, with its Greek temples dating from 6th century BC…best preserved in the world ! Not many people remember to go there !

The Aeolian islands…volcanic paradise…the volcano and its hot mud bath, Panarea for the best shopping, Lipari and its antiquities and Stromboli for the best (but very hard) hiking in the world.

We leave just before sunset…hard climb for almost 3 hours, snack by the boiling crater…by then we are wearing helmets for protection from the fire ! Flashlights on forehead for going down…about 2 hours on the soft lava ! Huge feeling of accomplishment…the earth is still more powerful than we are !
