I have been to Greece many times, but I never had time to understand Athens properly. This time, as I visit the Greek capital for the opening of the 2nd DVF shop there, in Kifissia, I decide to come a few days early and visit the city.
I arrive on a Saturday afternoon and Aris, my Greek partner is at the airport to welcome me and bring me to the Gran Britania Hotel where I settle in. Work does not start until Tuesday, so I have two full days for sightseeing. My very close friend, Greek artist Konstantine Kakanias is in town and has promised to take me around.
We visit the Benaki Museum, an exquisite museum of Hellenic art with a beautiful costume collection. We meet a friend at the Monastiraki, the flea market and continue to walk through hundred of gypsies selling odds and ends until Gazi, the hip neighborhood. We stop for lunch at Mamakas where I eat souvlaki and eggplants… delicious!!!
We then go to the new Acropolis Museum where we have a wonderful private visit. The Museum, created by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi and Greek architect Michalis Photiadis was a challenging task but the result is a masterpiece! Through the glass floor you can see the excavations and for the first time you can see the entire sculpted decoration of the Parthenon while seeing the Parthenon itself through the windows.
At Rebecca Camhi’s gallery, I see an exhibition of Konstantine’s paintings and buy 4 of them!!
Wednesday is the big day…the opening of the Kifissia DVF shop, and the day of the fashion show…The show takes place in an amazing theatre, the Hellenic Cosmos Cultural Center…it sits 500 people…the girls are very beautiful…I think it is a success!!
I love Athens, its people, its history, and I am so happy to have 2 DVF stores there.
