If there’s one thing we learned in the making of our take on Breakfast at Tiffany’s, it’s that, in addition to about ten million other talents that include designing our favorite accessories of the season, Harley Viera-Newton knows how to throw a party. So we caught up with the cat loving DJ on what it takes to mix the perfect tunes, the perfect drink and the perfect crowd to holiday party perfection. You may want to take notes.
What is your idea of a perfect party?
Friends, family, cats, tea sandwiches, and cupcakes.
We know you bake. Tell us about the cake you made for the shoot. Also, do you have any favorite holiday recipes?
I decided to make a black cat cake after my cat Marmite (the muse for the bag). I found an amazing vintage cat shaped cake tin at an estate sale and then detailed it with candy pearls and sprinkles. My favorite meal of the year is Christmas dinner, my mum makes the most amazing roast potatoes and stuffing.
A signature drink. Do or don’t?
Pick your poison! Vodka Tom Collins for me.
What is the best party you’ve ever been to? The worst?
My best friend Cassie and I threw a pretty amazing joint 22nd birthday party… but then we threw a pretty awful joint 24th birthday party.
If you could invite any 5 people, past or present, to your holiday party, who would they be?
The first that come to mind are Elvis, Hatshepsut, Connie Britton, Britney Spears, Anthony Bourdain, Rihanna – I could go on…this party sounds SO fun!
What advice can you give for dressing for a holiday party?
Have fun with it! It’s a great excuse to break out the sparkle or the bad holiday sweater.
What are the top three songs on your holiday party playlist?
Wham – Last Christmas
The Waitresses – Christmas Wrapping
Dolly Parton – Honky Tonk Angels
