Whether you plan to hit the beach or the park this weekend, we have just the book to keep you company. We recently got our hands on a copy of MacKenzie Bezos’ latest novel, Traps, and, we don’t want to give too much away but, in brief: we are transfixed. Women always inspire us and the four complex characters in this finely crafted piece of fiction are no exception. From security guard, Dana, and reclusive movie star, Jessica, to Lynn, who runs a dog shelter on a ranch in rural Nevada, and Vivian, a 17-year-old former prostitute and new mother of twins, there is no shortage of tough women in these pages. Bezos’ sparse style and fluid descriptions will pull you in, but it is the rich inner lives of these dynamic women as they play out over a span of four days that will keep you turning pages.
Diane often says that she has never met a woman who is not strong, but that too often it takes a tragedy to bring it out. This is a book about four disconnected women whose lives intersect amidst their struggle to find that strength. And as Lynn breaks it down for Jessica, “Life is full of things that feel like traps…but they’re not always what they seem. Sometimes later we see that they led us where we needed to go.” Like here.
