Neighborhood Watch: Urban Space Meatpacking

September 20, 2012

We have a new neighbor! Right next door to our studio, and tucked beneath the High Line, Urban Space Meatpacking is quickly becoming our go-to lunch spot. Food vendors from all over the city have set up shop, complete with family style picnic tables perfect for impromptu, between-meeting bites.

Here are a few of our favorites:

For a quick fix: Brooklyn Flea-favorite Asiadog loads their hotdogs with flavorful Asian-inspired, and totally unexpected, toppings. We love “The Mash,” a 100% beef hot dog layered with jalapeno-mustard and sweet and spicy ketchup and sprinkled with a satisfying layer of crushed potato chips.

For a daytime indulgence: Redhook Lobster Pound has us hooked! They serve their rolls on traditional split-top buns. The Maine-style lobster roll, with fresh chunks of Maine lobster served cold with celery, spices, and homemade mayo, gets our vote.

For DVF die-hards: Roberta’s, Bushwick’s hippest restaurant, holds its own with freshly made personal pizzas in a variety of savory toppings. Try the “Diane von Fungusberg,” a delightfully tongue-in-cheek tribute. Mushroom, kale, and a sprinkling of oregano liven up a creamy base of mozzarella and grana padano cheeses. Swirls of hot pink pickled onions add a bold twist to the taste and the presentation–and they’re almost the perfect shade of pink.

For an afternoon pick-me-up: We can’t stay away from city-standby Momofuku Milk Bar, and their new location is just one more reason to go for it. Their famous “Compost Cookie,” stands up to any craving you could possible have, with an intoxicating mix of chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, graham crumbs, pretzels, potato chips, and coffee grounds. Yes, please.
