SO DVF:
The 2015 Met Gala

The wait is over for the party of the year!
The theme of this year’s Met Gala and exhibition is “China: Through the Looking Glass” and we’re thrilled the show features a Qipao-inspired DVF wrap dress in the stunning China vine print.
The grand event also marks the debut of some spectacular custom DVF on the red carpet. For model Gigi Hadid’s first Met Gala appearance, Fall 2015 lace was spun into a butterfly bodice of silk overlayed with hand embroidered lace and appliqué flowers, all in good luck red. With a bias cut silk skirt, straps of individually beaded hand cut lace flowers and a back of sheer embellished lace, Gigi’s look truly steals the spotlight.
Kate Beckinsale’s look reimagines a hand pleated tie neck gown from our Fall collection in gold mesh jersey, with panels of hand embroidered gold lace on the hips and back in the same China vine featured in the show.
Kate Mara’s white crepe gown takes the mandarin collar and mixes it with a plunging twist neckline straight from the runway. Hand beading adds a touch of sparkle to her super chic look.
Last but not least, Diane selected a column of silk jersey in China vine, the colors accented with hand beading against the black and white print. As Diane loves to say, black and white and color is so DVF!

Jessica Joffe on Diane’s Oscar Luncheon

During the most densely social week of the year in Hollywood, 60 women–including 20 of this year’s Oscar nominees–took a chunk out of their no doubt very busy day to celebrate each other in the idyllic surroundings of Diane’s Beverly Hills home. As Rita Ora ran up the garden stairs in a jumpsuit straight off Sunday’s runway she exclaimed, “This is my dream house!”

Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike arrived with baby Atom in tow only for fellow nominee Meryl Streep to swoop him up in her arms and fawn over him along with Diane. With fairy godmothers like that, who needs blood relatives?!

Ava DuVernay, the stunningly talented director of “Selma,” talked about her upcoming film and TV projects and let herself be inundated with praise for her glorious film as the guests scattered around the house and gardens. Oscar nominees Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and producer Susan Downey sat with various members of the Academy while Dianne Warren and Malin Akerman decamped to the garden.

The camaraderie between the women, but particularly the nominees, was palpable and only grew when Diane took to the microphone, reminding everyone in the room that solidarity breeds strength, that gratitude and humility for one’s gifts is a daily practice. Her cohost, the twice decorated Oscar winner Hilary Swank, chimed in how honored she was to be in the presence of such an impressive group of women, followed by third cohost Anne Sweeney. Of course Diane could not resist singling out Meryl Streep for her extraordinary and unparalleled contribution to film, so Meryl responded by reminding all of us what an extraordinary contribution Diane has made to womankind by building up the Vital Voices network and its Women in the World Conference. “You put your money where your mouth is!” She went on to say how pleased she was to be in one room with so much female talent but that next year she wanted to see “the entire grounds covered in nominees!”

As dessert was being served I caught up with Rita Ora, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Carmen Ejogo, bathed in a celestial light–more beautiful than the three graces. Rita and Carmen dragged each other over to Meryl to take a picture as Rita confided that she had never been more nervous to do anything in her life!

As the guests dispersed, Rosamund and Atom stayed for a last moment in the sun under an enormous 200-year-old tree, a momentary respite before Sunday’s ceremony.

Jessica Joffe Recommends:
Peter Pan

My dear readers, we know you thought you had the rest of this month to slowly buy gifts for your friends and favorite Style Editors (email me for my wish-list) but tonight, and tonight only, you absolutely must stay home. Double-check your shadow is sewn properly to your person (lest it escape during a commercial break) and sit tight because our favorite girl Allison Williams will be flying and belting her way to Neverland on NBC’s live broadcast of Peter Pan at 8 PM: green cycling shorts, mesh t-shirts and all. Don’t be surprised if you find these items— including a harness— on my Christmas wish list.

Allison has been dreaming of playing the role most of her waking life – I wouldn’t be surprised if she came out of the womb with this small request sung in perfect pitch to an audience of casting directors in the delivery room. So, at age twenty-six— because the boy-who-will-never-grow-up has traditionally been played by a woman —the lovely Allison was granted her wish plus a dollop of icing on top: a worthy adversary in Christopher Walken as Captain Hook. (Interesting fact: Walken started as a chorus boy in musical theatre as a tween). Broadway veterans Christian Borle and Kelli O’Hara round out the cast as Mr. and Mrs. Darling and plummy Minnie Driver narrates. Yes, the entire cast suspects some of you will be hate-watching, but as long as you tune in you’ll likely be swept away by Allison’s indefatigable charm and effortless aerial skills.

Riviera:
Spring 2015

On Sunday afternoon it wasn’t fall in Manhattan, but rather a sparkling summer’s day on the Côte d’Azur, as models prepared to breeze down the runway in a crescendo of print and color: that would be our “Riviera” Spring 2015 collection. Inspired by the effortless glamour of Brigitte Bardot, and the work of Matisse and Picasso, ginghams and florals draped the cast of modern bombshells, including Naomi Campbell, Isabeli Fontana, Candace Swanepoel, Anna Ewers and Kendall Jenner, who smiled and posed backstage before receiving a warm instruction from Diane: Smile, have fun and be you!

The front of the house was filling up all the while, with an A-list mix of fashion, media and pop culture. Allison Williams looked fresh in the Spring ’15 Samella dress, and Lily Aldridge stunned in a navy Ireland jumpsuit while Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Denmark opted for a short Celeste romper. Zoey Deutch and Analeigh Tipton both wore floating chiffon from the Fall ’14 collection, while Estelle, Paris and Nicky Hilton all modeled bold Fall colors in classic DVF silhouettes. Anna Wintour spoke with New York’s First Lady Chirlene McCray, while André Leon Talley mingled with Whoopie Goldberg and BethAnn Hardison. Across the aisle, Olivia Palermo looked chic in a leather wrap, while Tali Lennox rocked a floor-length version of the timeless dress.

At last the audience took their seats and was treated to a whirlwind of chic black-and-white with pops of color in pink, sunshine yellow, and riviera blues that felt like a refreshing sea breeze across the sweltering Spring Studios. Crisp cotton, flowing chiffon, embellished shirtdresses and wraps will be the order of the day come spring!

The lush daydream did not end with Diane’s dance down the runway; rather the crowd came “home” to DVF Studio, which had been transformed with colorful furnishings and a glowing floral wall in the aptly named Eden garden print. The sparkling headquarters hosted everyone from Fran Lebowitz to Emily Weiss of Into the Gloss, who all came to offer their congratulations and toast Diane. For dinner, Estelle traded her firebird pants for a floor-length wrap and DVF’s Style Editor Jessica Joffe held court in a black wrap romper, as Paris Hilton arrived in a printed version of the same micro mini style. Ellen Barkin was spotted with Bryan Lourd and Wendi Murdoch while waiters snaked through the crowd with platters of hors d’oevres and champagne. Rachel Zoe arrived with husband Rodger Berman to pose and chat with the hostess, and Mickey Boardman lit up the room with his wit and his silver sequined polo, which was rivaled only by the stunning Elisa Sednaoui in a shimmering gold wrap.
After a Mediterranean feast of quiches, tabbouleh, fresh summer salads and fruit tarts, Diane reclined on the stairs, chatting with Peter Brant Jr., as the revelry continued long into the night… a fête worthy of the golden age of the dazzling, glamorous French Riviera.
