Summer Weekends: Jessica’s Picks

June 12, 2014

Summer has finally, mercifully arrived! We have the next eight Fridays to call in sick, dress casually, cut short and flee the city — preferred method of transport: side-car — so make the most of it. Diane says “If you pack lightly, you live lightly,” so in the spirit of ease, here’s what I recommend you bring with you. (Use the extra space in your bag for sunscreen (Crème de la Mer SPF 50 Protecting Fluid), a hair mask to protect your sun-fried hair (Bumble and Bumble Deeep) and reading material.)

White shorts – now that we are officially permitted to wear white – are surprisingly flattering and work to offset even the palest legs. A tailored pair like this can work at the beach, the farmer’s market, to lunch with the in-laws when you pair them with these textured brogues, but dressed up with a loose fitting red cashmere v-neck, a strappy sandal and a jewel-tone 440 Clutch you’ll be perfectly equipped for a spontaneous sunset date.

Rompers are (with the notable exception of bathroom visits and spontaneous seductions) the most practical item of clothing a girl can own. An entire outfit in one! Of course DVF has perfected the romper, giving it the seemingly impossible twin elements of whimsy and grownup, sexy je ne sais quoi. From the front: it’s the shortest wrap dress known to man! From the back: a secret pair of shorts to preserve your modesty. You can play tennis in the wrap romper or slap on a pair of heels, wear it to a ballroom dancing contest and win!

Finally: the shirt dress. When you’re traveling you need to think of items that don’t require ironing. A large pattern like this will camouflage creases and wrinkles perfectly. Second of all, this dress has as unlimited an appeal as your imagination will allow. Wear it as a tunic with a pair of jeans underneath on a cold night. Tuck it into your pencil skirt and wear it as a shirt! Knot it at the hip and wear a pair of shorts underneath. Belt it at the waist when you’ve run out of options. Please note that this color combination looks good on absolutely everyone, but don’t take my word for it. Try it yourself.
