Red Carpet Watch: Journey of a Dress

January 13, 2014

The Journey of a Dress exhibition was launched in grand fashion on Friday with a star studded celebration of the 40th anniversary of the wrap dress. Andy Cohen and Coco Rocha were on the red carpet ready to greet guests such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Allison Williams, Anna Wintour, Rooney Mara, Abbie Cornish, Ashley Olsen, Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe. (If you missed the Livestream, check it out here!)

Guests entered the historic Wilshire May Company building—former home of the May Co. department store where the wrap dress was sold in the 70’s—to find a photo timeline highlighting the biggest moments in wrap dress history, from Diana Vreeland’s praises in a letter that launched Diane’s career, to its most recent big screen cameo in David O. Russell’s American Hustle.  A glass collage created by contemporary artist Dustin Yellin shone beneath a neon sign with the words Diane scribbled on a blank white cube in her very first ad: Feel like a woman, wear a dress!

And there was certainly no shortage of women wearing dresses. Guests such as Marisa Tomei, Jennifer Meyer (accompanied by husband Tobey Maguire), and Molly Sims, floated through the art room past an imposing Chuck Close portrait to a wall of Warhols, and past an impressive array of wrap dresses—from the very first in 1974, to a number of Anniversary Dresses created exclusively for the exhibition, all arranged to resemble an army of Xi’an warriors. Guests sipped champagne and nibbled samosas as they made their way into the recreated Studio 54, where disco balls cast a pattern of light against the walls that could have been a DVF print. Rosario Dawson was one of the last to drift down the chain link printed hallway as the evening came to an end. And with the exhibition running through April, it seems the party is just getting started.
